🏥 SG History: Alexandra Hospital – Blood, Bananas & Redemption
Not your typical newsletter feature, but this one’s personal. A family member was recently warded at Alexandra Hospital, so i did some research (quick google search) to find out more than just sterile walls and linoleum floors.
Tucked in leafy Queenstown, Alexandra Hospital may look like another quiet medical campus now, but it’s got one hell of a backstory.
Built in 1938 by the British as a state-of-the-art military hospital, it was designed to serve soldiers from the nearby Tanglin Barracks. But its real history took a brutal turn just four years later. When the Japanese invaded in February 1942, the hospital became the site of a horrific massacre — over 200 staff and patients were killed in cold blood over two harrowing days. Some were bayoneted in their beds. Others, dragged out and executed in the corridors. No movie could do it justice.
Post-war, the hospital dusted itself off and rebuilt — first as a British military facility, then later under Singapore’s Ministry of Health. Today? It’s a serene, green sanctuary blending heritage with healing. The colonial buildings still stand, swaddled in nature, and inside you’ll find doctors using AI and robotic tools — a fascinating mix of old soul and future tech.
They say hospitals hold stories. Alexandra’s is one carved in blood, resilience, and quiet redemption.
🥾 Outdoor Adventure: The Southern Ridges – Skywalks, Forests & Free Therapy
If your soul’s running on fumes and your screen time looks criminal, it’s time to lace up and hit The Southern Ridges.
Stretching 10km from Mount Faber to Kent Ridge Park, this elevated nature trail is one of Singapore’s best-kept not-so-secrets. Think winding forest paths, canopy walks, panoramic views of the city and sea, and the kind of quiet that makes you forget emails exist.
Here’s what to expect:
Henderson Waves: Singapore’s highest pedestrian bridge, shaped like a literal wave — Instagram bait that lives up to the hype.
Forest Walk: An elevated metal path through secondary forest. Feel small in the best way.
Alexandra Arch & Floral Walk: Lush, tropical, and occasionally smells like mango leaves and adventure.
Kent Ridge Canopy Trail: WWII vibes, war history panels, and monitor lizards that give zero damn.
What to bring?
Water, sunscreen, comfy shoes, and someone you can tolerate for a few hours. A light poncho’s not a bad shout either — Singapore weather is like a moody ex.
Cost? Free.
Reward? Mental clarity, quad activation, and the smug satisfaction of having "done something outdoorsy."

🍴Bites and Drinks

Blue Ginger (Tanjong Pagar)
A Peranakan classic that does Grandma proud. Think ayam buah keluak, babi pongteh, and sambals that slap. Michelin-approved, but still humble.
Caffe Pralet (Tiong Bahru)
This Tiong Bahru gem has two moods: indulgent sandwiches and sinful donuts. Try both or at least the Burned Honey Butter Donut. Regret nothing.
Riverside Buns
Casual vibes, serious burgers. The beef’s juicy, the buns are fluffy, and Mondays? 1-for-1 burgers from 5–8pm. You’re welcome.
🎭 Shakespeare in the Park: Macbeth
Now playing ‘til 1st June @ Fort Canning Green
Murder, ambition, ghosts, and very questionable marriage advice. SRT’s outdoor production of Macbeth is gripping, atmospheric, and staged under the stars. Bring a picnic, a bottle of wine, and someone who won’t ask too many questions during intermission. Get your tickets »
